Fundamental data are the measurements of a company’s performance based upon the data that has been reported to their shareholders. This information comes from quarterly and annual reports. They include balance sheet information and other key financial reports. Quantitative analysists use these numbers as factors in their decisions to buy or sell a stock based on the intrinsic data values in the reports.
There are also common ratios of this data that are included in the fundamental data.
Some common indicators commonly found in fundamental data:
- Cash Flow
- Assets
- Earnings per Share
CloudQuant provides access to fundamental data using our Liberator API and Morningstar (tm) historical data. See:
- Morningstar Monthly Earnings as Originally Reported (AOR) & Earnings Restatements

A Data Scientists may call Fundamental Data by other names including "alpha signals", or "balance sheet attributes", or "fundamental ratios".
Best PracticesThe Morningstar data is updated daily. There is no need to query the data in your backtesting often. Your best practice is to query the fundamental Morningstar data at the start of each simulated trading day.
